Romance Scams: Protecting Your Heart and Your Crypto
Beware of online romance scams that target crypto investors—watch for warning signs like money requests and avoidance of video calls.
SHARE

The internet has made it easier than ever to find love, but it has also given scammers new ways to exploit emotions for financial gain. Romance scams have become a growing threat, and in recent years, many of these scams have expanded into the crypto world, where victims are tricked into sending cryptocurrency to fraudsters. Unlike traditional bank transactions, crypto transfers are irreversible, making it nearly impossible to recover stolen funds.

How Romance Scams WorkRed Flags of a Crypto Romance ScamHow to Protect YourselfFinal Thoughts

Understanding how these scams work and how to spot red flags can help you protect both your heart and your finances.

How Romance Scams Work

Romance scammers typically create fake online profiles on dating sites, social media platforms, or messaging apps. They build emotional connections with their victims over days, weeks, or even months, gaining their trust before eventually making a financial request.

In crypto-related romance scams, the fraudster often introduces investment opportunities or claims they need financial help with urgent expenses. The goal is to trick the victim into transferring cryptocurrency to the scammer’s wallet, after which they disappear.

Real-Life Examples of Crypto Romance Scams

The $1.8 Million Crypto Romance Scam (2021)

A woman in the U.S. was defrauded of $1.8 million after meeting a scammer on a dating app. The scammer convinced her to invest in a fake crypto trading platform. Once she transferred her funds, the scammer vanished, and the platform was revealed to be a fraud.

Pig Butchering Scams

This term refers to scammers who “fatten up” their victims by building long-term trust before making financial demands. Many pig butchering scams involve fake crypto investment platforms, where victims are shown false profits before being asked to invest more. Eventually, the scammer disappears with all the money.

Red Flags of a Crypto Romance Scam

1. Fast-Forming Relationships

If someone you just met online is too eager to build a relationship or starts professing love too quickly, be cautious. Scammers use emotional manipulation to create a false sense of intimacy.

2. Refusal to Meet in Person or Video Call

Most romance scammers avoid face-to-face meetings or video calls, often making excuses like “I’m working overseas” or “I don’t have a webcam.” If someone always dodges video calls, they could be hiding their real identity.

3. Introducing Crypto Investments Early On

Many scammers pretend to be crypto experts and encourage their victims to invest in fake platforms or send funds to their wallet. If a new online connection suddenly offers you an “exclusive” investment opportunity, it’s likely a scam.

4. Requests for Cryptocurrency or Financial Help

Scammers often fabricate emergencies, claiming they need help paying medical bills, travel expenses, or business investments. Once you send the money, they continue asking for more until you realize the scam.

5. High-Pressure Tactics and Urgency

Fraudsters rush their victims into sending money by using tactics like “Act fast before this crypto opportunity disappears!” They rely on urgency to prevent victims from thinking critically.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Verify Their Identity: Conduct a reverse image search of their profile pictures to check for stolen or fake images.
  • Never Send Money to Someone You Haven’t Met: If someone asks for crypto or financial help, it’s a major red flag.
  • Be Skeptical of Investment Offers: If an online love interest promotes a crypto investment opportunity, assume it’s a scam.
  • Use Reputable Dating Platforms: Stick to well-known dating sites with strict verification measures.
  • Report Suspicious Behavior: If you suspect a scam, report it to law enforcement, the dating platform, or a crypto fraud organization like the FTC or Action Fraud.

Final Thoughts

Romance scammers prey on emotions, using trust and love as weapons to steal money. With cryptocurrency, the risks are even greater since transactions are irreversible. By staying alert and recognizing red flags, you can protect yourself from falling victim to crypto romance scams.

If an online love interest ever asks for crypto, remember: Love is priceless, but scams can cost you everything.
